Oban

Oban

Oban is a small coastal town in the West Highlands. The name Oban means the little bay in Scots Gaelic (An t-Òban). It is often referred to as the gateway to the isles due to its ferry terminal and various sailings from the town. The ferry terminal is run by Calmac short for Caledonian Macbrayne. There are sailings to many islands such as Mull, Kerrara, Colonsay, Islay, Tiree, Coll, Barra and Lismore.

Oban is around a 2 hour drive from Glasgow as it is approximately a 100 mile journey North West on the A82 road. The road follow’s part of the West Highland Way along the famous banks of Loch Lomond. There is an option to go two ways to Oban from Arrochar whereby you can go on the A83 towards Inverary or continue on the A82 towards Crianlarich. Both routes merge on the A85 road just outside of Dalmally where it is definitely worthwhile stopping to take in the views of Kilchurn Castle. Also near Kilchurn Castle is the Cruachan Power station & Visitor and the Crauchan Dam which featured in Disney’s Star Wars Andor.

Edinburgh to Oban is a longer journey of around 125 miles and will take around 2.5 hours.

Other ways to get there include the train, bus or by plane.
