Bruichladdich is Islay‘s most progressive distillery — a revived, fiercely independent-minded producer that has become known for championing terroir, transparency and Islay-grown barley, and for making everything from delicate unpeated malt to the most heavily peated whisky in the world.
History of Bruichladdich
Built in 1881 on the shore of Loch Indaal, on the Rinns of Islay, Bruichladdich fell silent in the 1990s before being famously revived in 2001 by a group of enthusiasts who reopened it using much of its original Victorian machinery. Styling themselves “progressive Hebridean distillers”, they set out to do things differently, and the distillery — now owned by Rémy Cointreau — retains that bold, experimental spirit today.
The distillery today
Bruichladdich puts provenance and transparency at the heart of what it does: bottling without chill-filtration or added colouring, championing barley grown on Islay and Scottish farms, and detailing the origins of its whiskies. It also distils the hugely successful The Botanist Islay gin, using 22 local botanicals.
The whisky
The distillery produces three distinct single malt identities: the unpeated Bruichladdich (the floral, elegant “Classic Laddie”), the heavily peated Port Charlotte, and the super-heavily peated Octomore — regularly the most heavily peated whisky in the world, yet astonishingly drinkable. Together they showcase the full range of what Islay can do.
