Oban is one of Scotland’s oldest and smallest distilleries, tucked right into the heart of the west-coast town that grew up around it. History of Oban
The distillery was founded in 1794 by brothers Hugh and John Stevenson — remarkably, it actually predates much of the town of Oban, which developed around it as the settlement grew into a busy Victorian resort and ferry port. Squeezed onto a cramped site beneath steep cliffs in the town centre, Oban has never been able to expand, and it remains one of the smallest distilleries in the Diageo portfolio, with just two stills.
The distillery today
Oban is one of Diageo’s original “Classic Malts of Scotland”, chosen to represent the West Highland style. Its small scale and town-centre location give it a character all its own, and its slow distillation in small stills helps create the rich, complex spirit for which it is known.
The whisky
Oban’s house style is a wonderful bridge between regions — full-bodied and rounded, with orange peel, sea salt, honey, dried fig and a gentle wisp of smoke. The 14 Year Old is the flagship and a beautifully balanced everyday malt, joined by the no-age-statement Little Bay and the sherry-finished Distillers Edition. It is an excellent choice for anyone wanting to explore whisky beyond the classic Speyside style.
Visiting Oban Distillery
The distillery could not be easier to visit: it is right in the centre of Oban, just yards from the harbour and railway station. Tours are popular and intimate given the distillery’s size, so book ahead in summer. Oban itself is the “Gateway to the Isles”, so you can easily combine a visit with a trip to Mull, Iona or the wider Hebrides.
Getting there
Oban is about two to three hours from Glasgow by road or on the scenic West Highland Line train, so the distillery can be visited even without a car.
