McCaig’s Tower
McCaig’s Tower is an iconic folly situated in the skyline of Oban. The tower is situated on Battery Hill, which is a prominent hill overlooking Oban Bay. The site was chosen because it provides an excellent view of the town and the surrounding area. The tower is built in the shape of a colosseum and has two tiers of arches. There is a viewing platform that offers panoramic views of Oban Bay, the islands of Kerrera and Mull, and the surrounding hills.
The tower was built between 1895 and 1902 by John Stuart McCaig, a wealthy philanthropist and banker from Oban. He designed the tower to provide work for local stonemasons and to provide a lasting monument to his family.
McCaig’s tower was originally intended to be a museum and art gallery. However, McCaig died before the tower was completed, and it was never used for this purpose.
How to get to McCaigs Tower
The tower is located in the town centre skyline. From the Oban Distillery it really is a walk up the hill. This can be very steep. Alternatively you can drive and park at the tower. The roads a re steep and fairly narrow, with several being one way. The view at the top will be worth the effort.
